2022: A Week in the Life of a Successful Practice Owner

I’ve themed this year 2022 the year of you!  It’s been a battle over the past two years and there will always be challenges to overcome.  This year it’s time to step up and give back to yourself for all you deserve.  Whether that’s getting home earlier, taking more vacations, buying something you’ve been putting off, adding to your investments, or whatever else suits your fancy.

Here’s the thing: there’s only one way to make any of that happen and that’s to have your practice be as profitable as possible.  As a matter of fact, there is nothing more important than your practice profitability because that is what gives you autonomy and independence to do it all on your own terms.

If you want to unlock the keys to true practice prosperity then I have just the thing for you.  I’ve created a special New Year series (that’s free to subscribers like you) that guides you through the most important aspects of practice profitability, helps you to gain clarity around your goals, and designs a blueprint to make them achievable.

Now, we are a week into 2022.  Can you believe it?  If you take out the couple weeks for the Holidays at the end of this year that means we’re already under 50 weeks to go in another year of your life and your career.

It’s easy to look at it that way.  Every week is 2% of your year.  If you equate that to your goals (whether it’s books to read, weight to lose, experiences to have, money to save, wealth to build, dentistry to do), it’s a pretty easy calculation to determine whether you are on track or off track, ahead or behind.

There’s a trick in business that most practice owners ignore – or at best often are reactive with – and that’s paying attention to the indicators of success.  This is more than just tracking statistics; it’s about knowing your numbers and being aware of the things that tell you how well you are doing.

Several numbers can do that.  The most important of which are diagnosis, case acceptance, scheduled treatment, and of course collections.  Another few numbers to pay attention to are average case value (both presented and accepted), how much dentistry is on the schedule for the future, and how many new patients are on the schedule for the future.

While all of this information is a review and very basic, very few Doctors have built into their weekly flow time to look at the vital signs of their practice.  Even when they do they are past reflections of performance, not future indicators of results.

I’m challenging you this year to be more proactive than ever before at knowing your numbers so you can be better at making decisions, leading your team, and running your practice by the facts.

We’ve invested the last several Weekly Reports getting you ready for 2022 and putting the focus fully on you.  On your ideal schedule, on gaining clarity for the year ahead, and what is most important to you.  We’ve talked about not just setting goals but implementing personal disciplines and measures of control to protect you.  We’ve reverse engineered down to the dollars per day and probably per hour and certainly per column and provider in your schedule exactly what needs to happen.

As long as you stay true to that plan and execute on it accordingly you can’t fail.  You will succeed and you’ll do it in a way that doesn’t have to play catch up all year long.

That, by the way, is why this ‘week in the life’ multiplied fifty times over is so critical.  If you can dial in a week at a time, you can rinse and repeat that system – and that is what it is, a system for your success – and you will experience a breakthrough year in every way.

This is why I’m calling 2022 the year of You.  Everyday do something for yourself.  To take care of yourself.  To nourish yourself.  To pay attention to yourself.  To check in and check on yourself.  And I want you to build a battle plan for a week at a time feeding into your months and quarters that have been worked backwards from the reverse engineering “begin with the end in mind” conversation we had last week.

The thing is, it’s just not all about the money.  It is more important to control ‘how’ the money is made.  If you control the how you can easily engineer and calibrate the how much.

If you missed my special New Year Training Series, my gift to you, you’ll find this path to practice profitability the most comprehensive resource package and support system I’ve ever created.

Create Your Blueprint To Greater Practice Profits & Lifestyle Balance…

I have three main points to today’s Report.

First, set and commit to successful Ownership Habits right now and build them into your weekly routine.

This is everything from preparing for the week in advance and time blocking each task (workouts, office hours, treatment planning, team meetings, and obviously your clinical days).

If you take my future focused principle and apply it to the week ahead and map out a successful next seven days, you will be amazed by how much you have to show for it when you reflect on the back at end of that week.

Second, don’t wait to see your numbers drop to start doing something about them.  Stay out ahead of them in every way.  It is more important to know ‘how am I doing’ instead of ‘how did I do’ and it’s most important to know ‘how’s it looking’ based on what hasn’t yet happened.  That way, we still have an opportunity to change it and course correct it.

If you compare and contract your reverse engineered goals and ideals in the next two weeks with what reality is looking like so far, you will always have an opportunity to level up the days ahead.

This is the discipline and the commitment of champions and what sets apart those who are always successful from those who are lucky once and a while.

It’s predictable because you know your numbers and you know what to do to stimulate them to be what you want them to be in order to achieve your desired goals and objectives.

By the way, to state the obvious, don’t stop at knowing numbers.  The entire point is what the numbers tell us we should do, how we can execute to improve and increase those numbers.

Whether that is rearranging the schedule to hit daily targets or filling open chair time productively not just by any means necessary or if it’s doing more to educate new patients or any other responsibilities that every team member in the practice should know and be held accountable for.

Next week, I’m going to revisit with you the three most important factors to determine the health of your practice and these three alone are the greatest ways to take the temperature of your practice.  I’ll tell you exactly how to do what I’m talking about today with these three key components to your practice success and profitability.

Finally, and you won’t be expecting this one, I want you to relax.  Don’t take yourself too seriously.  Yes, you are a week into your year and it’s going to feel at times like it drudgery and other times it’s going to seem like it’s moving so fast.

Here’s the thing… it is work, but it’s your work.  Your chosen profession and thanks to you, you’ve created an amazing life for yourself.  A fulfilling career and a practice that makes it all possible.

So, you deserve to savor it and to maximize it all at the same time.  The good news is that’s possible.  And the peace of mind you will have by doing the first two things I laid out here for you today to help you set up yourself for week by week success in this gauntlet of a year is critical for your peace of mind and your sanity, not just your profitability and goals.

There’s always a fine line between the intensity you bring and the calm steady control that a leader should always have.

Be present inside of it.  Take deep breaths…literally.  Make it more fun.  And choose to enjoy your weekly experience in your life.

Then you get to reflect and assess the past week, change and adapt the current week, engineer and create the future weeks.  One week at a time you’ll put together a masterpiece of a year that will check all the boxes, achieve all your goals, but more than anything else have you being the best You!

You’ve got an entire year (minus only one week) ahead to make it exactly and everything you want it to be.

So, what are you waiting for?  Time’s a ticking… don’t let another week pass you by.
