Built To Sell – Part 1 [Launch Announcement]

If you were going to build a house or a building or pretty much anything at all, you would absolutely focus on the end result, the final product, the ultimate vision.  In fact, that is where you would begin.

The most successful Dental Practices are built the same way with a focus on purpose and vision.  Ultimately, you are determining how you want it to fit into your life both clinically and financially.

This all sounds like common sense; of course you would think about the vision.  That said, what most Doctors forget (until it is too late to do anything about it), is what’s the end game?  Not just the vision of your life owning a practice or your dentistry while you are still the doctor seeing patients, but what might the ultimate finish look like for you?

Perhaps a more important question is not ‘what’ but ‘when’ and exactly how will you finish strong, go out on top, and do it on your own terms and timing.

You may be sitting here reading this saying that you’d love to keep working until you’re dead.  That may be true for you and the easiest thing for you to say but I’m betting there are a whole bunch of other people in your life that might prefer a different, more realistic approach to your life’s work and the chapter at the end of your career.

Here’s the thing: many people throw around the term “retire in practice” and, while that’s a great concept, that can mean a variety of outcomes.  The one thing it means most often is that someone isn’t capable of retiring in the first place and they are therefore dependent on the income of the practice in order to survive.

Either way, here’s the point of a Built To Sell Practice… it’s that you reach a place where you work exclusively by choice and therefore you can afford yourself more comfortable decisions.  You get to define and design the way in which you want to work for as long as you want to keep doing so.  When the time comes that you want to consider an exit, you have multiple paths available to you and you get to be in control over exactly you transition.

Yes, of course, one of the keys to building your practice with the end in mind is that we are focused on making it worth as much as possible to you and that means it will be valued at a greater amount.

None the less, you do realize that the real value of your practice is based on one thing and one thing only: what someone else is willing to pay for it.  You will be at the mercy of the marketplace, the banks, the corporations, and other doctors if you are only thinking about your practice as an asset you are going to sell someday and hoping to retire with millions of dollars.

It just doesn’t work that way.  And you’ve sacrificed too much for someone else to tell you what your life is worth.

That is why the number one principle of Built To Sell is: get rich along the way so at the end of the line you are at the mercy of no one – period.

As promised, I’m going to be presenting a very intense, very comprehensive formula of what it takes to effectively and properly build a practice for sale so that you can have all of these important principles working to your advantage and not the other way around.

We will discuss the four cornerstones of the most viable built to sell practices that give you lifestyle while you practice, position you for the most versatile and valuable exit, and ensure you are practicing on your terms (which means not delaying everything you want until some magical end).

I’m going to peel back the curtain and walk you through several very recent examples of different kinds of exits.  We’ll explore a variety of opportunities that are available to you, which all require a different thought process, different timing, different preparation strategies, and ultimately are based on your different goals and objectives.

There is something very interesting that I’ve noticed and experienced first hand with my doctors over nearly two decades… that is no matter what age or stage in life, a doctor can wake up and realize they need more certainty about their end game, their “retirement” plan, and their future vision.

Every Doctor has a different comfort level, some decide in a couple years from now I’m ready to sell, some think about it 5-10 years out with no specificity, and yet others start their career with a deadline in their minds of when they want to reach their true and total independence.

I’m not sure where that moving target is for you right now.  You may not be sure either.  What we both can be absolutely certain of is that no one’s life comes with any guarantees and it is the responsible thing to do for yourself, your family, your team, and your patients to build a practice on stable ground with a solid business foundation that allows you to sell at some point should you ever want to or have to – while maximizing and making the most of your life’s work along the way.

You won’t be surprised to discover that the most significant thing that comes from building your practice to sell is the incredible peace of mind that keeps everything in perspective.  You will find the greatest happiness of ownership you’ve ever felt and that fulfillment is more valuable than any ‘big check’ at the end.

I invite you to allow me the privilege of being your guide as we go to work to ensure your practice is providing all of that to you.  It will happen by committing to the four cornerstones of a practice built to sell.

Let’s begin that right here.
