Here Comes 2020 – How To Win Big!

As the world turns and the calendar changes, you have an opportunity to design the next year to be whatever you want.  To do the same, to do differently, to do very differently – both inside and outside of your practice.

I’ve always preferred the approach to simplify life every year by refocusing on the core principles and highest value priorities that are what your practice and life successes are grounded up on.

After 365 days of basically non-stop action there is one thing we can be certain of: you accumulate a lot of baggage… clutters in practice, clutters in mind, clutters in time, clutters in projects, clutters in priorities and the list goes on.

The main point is, as we conclude this year and prepare to begin the next one, that you begin it on your terms so you can stay in control of your agenda and ensure your practice actions align with your goals.

We’ve talked about this for weeks and now we are running out of calendar.  It’s time to take action and be ready for all that is next.

If you’ve been hiding under a rock avoiding the Holiday Crazies and have somehow missed the opportunity for me to create with you a 2020 Practice Success Blueprint you’ve got one last chance.  I mean only one because I’ve got only one available opportunity for one final Doctor to discuss with me their 2020 vision next week before New Year’s hits.

If you are ready to truly better your best and make 2020 the year that puts you at the pinnacle of your career, then…

To round out the year, I thought I would give you some Practice Tips for making progress and sticking to your plans throughout all of 2020.  These will help ensure that the discussions we’ve had over the past few weeks about what you want to do and the goals you’ve set become realities.

Here’s a couple things that matter to your success and I want you to pay attention as I lay this out…

First, my principle and action method of Reverse Engineering.

We talk about this for your entire year in terms of total revenue required to deliver you the income that makes your life work and achieves your goals broken down into your Clinical Days so you have a clear and accurate Daily Goal Target.

Certainly, you should also be reverse engineering your actual clinical day to be organized effectively to be able to hit this daily goal on a consistent basis and this must be driven by the accountability of your team to see it through.

You also want to reverse engineer your personal schedule including enough vacation, family experiences, and continue education that gives you balance.  Then your weekly routine that allows for your exercise, personal time, and also professional development.

Second, I’d like to remind you about the powerful concept of visualization and living through the future you want to have before it actually arrives.

This is in part what I have been having you focus on throughout the past couple weeks, but it gets better and even more important.  Every single daily huddle should be the team walking through the day as you wish it to be and to be focused on positive outcomes by thinking through how to build the most successful day possible based on helping your patients get healthy.

Of course, this is best when done by you each week and month.  This puts you in control of and responsible for ensuring that it all adds up.  Yes, while we don’t fixate on the numbers we do pay attention to them and it does have to add up.

The next commitment to make to yourself, specifically as a Doctor, is that you will combine these two things together for every patient you serve… reverse engineering and visualization to the state of ideal and optimal health through comprehensive treatment planning.  The bottom line is you can’t make a dollar that doesn’t exist first diagnostically and this is the top line number that has to be there first.

It puts your entire practice philosophy, modus operandi, and priorities of your day into perspective when you focus on a diagnostically driven practice that is of course supported and brought to life by your team.

Third and finally for today, I want to really challenge you on what you let get in your way and distract you from your overall objectives and goals.

At the end of the day, there is a cause and effect to everything.  Most weeks right here in the Weekly Report we talk about some ‘cause’ that will yield an ‘effect’ (either negative or positive), by being proactive with your approach to life, business, dentistry, communication, leadership, money – everything.

The same goes for the New Year.  If what you say you want is so important to you that you actually work to achieve it, then your discipline to make it happen can’t be optional.  It simply has to be ‘what you do.’

Here’s the deal… you must be willing to put the same level of thought, reflection, and course correction that you do at the end of the year into every quarter, every month, and at least a little bit every week.  Then the changes you want to implement are built into your days with morning huddles and end of the day debriefs.

And you have to understand it isn’t ultimately up to your team – it is up to you – that is why you are called OWNER.

Owning is the state of possession.  What you possess is a business and an opportunity to design and execute your approach.  You don’t own success, you aren’t entitled to anything.  In fact, it’s vital to understand that what you own most is your own personal responsibility to take control over the desired outcomes that you want.

With the New Year coming, it’s critical to remind yourself that it’s not about celebrating the turn of the calendar, but rather about doing something with the days that make it up.

So, how do you become successful in 2020?  You do it one day at a time.  Instead of celebrating 2020 on January 1st – you should be celebrating 2019.  Then, based on your actions and what you’ve achieved, one year from now you will have something else to celebrate because of what you DID with 2020.

Remember, you aren’t a spectator to your own life.  You are the player on the field and you’ve got the ball in your hands.  Decide what winning means to you and then go to work to make it happen.

I have no doubt that your new year is going to be the best one yet because you are committed to make it so.  Anything less would be less than you deserve.

Happy New Year – here’s to 2020 being everything you’ve always wanted and more.
