The Tale Of Two Doctors – Part 2

What we all know, and you certainly do because you execute it with patients’ health every single day, is that if we want a specific outcome from something you have to do specific things to get it.

If we go back to our story about two different doctors living relatively the same career paths and absolutely the same modality of earning income in dentistry – yet both their experiences and outcomes are far different – how can this be?

Well to state the obvious there are incredible and dramatic differences between the two – what one did and what one didn’t do.  One life happened to and the other purposefully crafted a life.

At the end of the day, it revolves around one central idea and that is how they choose to own, operate, utilize, perceive, and master their business.  It really is that plain and simple.  You have the same thing “dentistry” that is in common – so that’s not the difference – instead it is in the ‘business’ side of it all.

And that’s understandable because the age-old question every doctor asks themselves is, “How many hours of education did I get in business before becoming the owner of a seven-figure business?”

Of course, we know the answer and therefore the only way to learn about this is through your own experience, through years of trial and error, and through tedious detours, and through mountains of frustration.  Eventually, if you last long enough, you end up at exactly the practice you want to have hopefully when you can still enjoy it.

Or, the alternative is to leverage experience, accelerate your progress, and do the ‘business of dentistry’ differently than anyone else you know in order to have a completely and totally different result – and not just in money but also in time, autonomy, freedom, and especially fulfillment.

The interesting thing about these two doctors is that they each arrive at a number of crossroads during their careers where they – you – get to decide which way you will go…

Take what you get

-or-

Create what you want

That is the difference between two owners of a business that looks very similarly from the outside but are dramatically different on the inside… not to mention the quality of the lifestyle that goes along with it, which as you’ve surely learned, you can’t separate the quality of business from the quality of life.

If you want to look at true lifestyle design and evaluate how your practice as a business serves you in the future, then consider my 2021 Practice Success Blueprint to create your ‘Best Year Ever.’  You’ll find my formula for lifestyle alignment and approach to the business of dentistry refreshing…

Best of all it’s custom built specifically for you and your unique practice.

Let’s boil this all down into the five big shifts in mindset that the doctor with the more desirable, less stressful, and more rewarding practice accepts.

First, you must give yourself permission to desire more for yourself and stop feeling guilty about it.  If you aren’t asking yourself what’s next for you, for your practice, for your life then you can’t be unhappy with the result.

Only you can look to the future and say “here’s what I want it to be” and of course it’s understandable that you put everyone else first every single day – but at some point, you have to step back and acknowledge that the business is supposed to serve the owner.

Which leads me to the biggest paradigm shift of all that most doctors never make and the reason they never get beyond “just good enough” – they accept their practice as a business that you simply work in.  They are, by default, only self-employed.

Instead, I want you to look at yourself as owner and investor, not just a doctor.  Your business is supposed to work for you, not just you working for it.

You can be a solo doctor and still have two streams of income… income from doing dentistry and profit from owning the practice.  You can then take that to the next level with other procedures or associates or income streams of all shapes and sizes that are possible without running up overhead or insurance or hours or team members or any other unwanted headaches.

This difference is the doctor who sets out to maximize their asset and grow their potential (not just collect a pay check), ends up with a more valuable and more profitable business.  Therefore, you have more peace of mind to live life on your terms – without always thinking about the lost days or production.

Shift your mind and give yourself permission to dream more.

Shift your mind and believe that it is possible and you deserve it.

Shift your mind to create a clear vision of the future that you actually want.

Then shift your business and practice structure to match with a plan engineered to bring it to life!

And, you guessed it, that is the big missing piece… the plan.

Something that brings your vision and practice potential to life by taking into account all the variables and uncertainties while ensuring that your goals (from lifestyle and schedule to bucket list, wealth, retirement, and giving back) are achievable.

Craft a Plan to Achieve Dental Practice Success in 2021…

So many doctors miss this planning stage and they end up at the mercy of others and being reactive to things that happen instead of in control of what they want to happen.  As the months and years pass by (sometimes even decades), a “nice” retirement is often still possible, but it comes at the expense and sacrifice of what truly matters.  The implications are lasting and consequential.

The reality is, you aren’t in the ‘dental’ game – that’s not what limits you.  You are in the ‘business’ game – whether you like it or not, admit it or not, are good at it or not.

Which doctor’s story ultimately becomes your own, boils down to this…

One is limited by their business.

One is liberated by their business.

Let that sink in and then decide which one you are (or would like to be).

Every doctor grows their clinical skills but that doesn’t mean they use them.  Every doctor has a team but that doesn’t mean they get the most out of them.  Every doctor cares for patients but that doesn’t meant they achieve optimal results for them.  Every doctor has a business but that doesn’t mean the business facilitates their goals and helps them to realize their potential.

Most doctors limit themselves by limiting their business.

Your challenge, should you accept it, is to understand that you don’t have to – nor can you – do it all by yourself.  You have gotten to where you are; which is not a bad place.  In fact, it’s probably a place you once thought would be everything you’d ever need…

But life isn’t about ‘need’ – instead it’s about not squandering your potential, not wasting opportunity, not missing out on living your passions, and not delaying life’s enjoyments.

Every doctor I have ever met has always known there was something missing, some piece to their puzzle that they just couldn’t figure out, some obstacle holding them back from it all coming together.  They knew it all was within grasp – more fun, more profitable, more fulfilling, less stressful, less frustration, less exertion.

Every doctor I work with desired to work smarter and not harder.  They felt they were at a plateau and had to breakthrough in order to get to the next level of their life and practice.

If this resonates, even in the least, then you owe it to yourself to seek out and accept my help, support, and guidance to put together your breakthrough plan for 2021 and beyond.

I call it your Practice Success Blueprint and we’ll design it to get the maximum potential out of your practice so you can get the maximum potential out of your life and do it all with the least amount of effort, time, and burden possible.

We are approaching another New Year and with it a crossroads where you must determine what you will do next. Will it be just more of the same (which, quite frankly, may not be that bad), or will it be something better.  Perhaps more rewarding, less stressful, more fulfilling, or more profitable.  Possibly more autonomy and freedom to do the things you want.

Your New Year is a New Choice.  One day at a time, you get to craft your journey on your own terms.  That is if you’ve taken time to visualize what exactly you want your year to look like, decided how you want your practice to fit into your life, and written out all that you want to have to show for 2021.

The difference between these two doctors, one made the commitment to review progress, reimagine what’s possible, rewrite the plan, and make sure that as their life evolved so did their practice.

It’s time to create your plan for 2021.  Another year, another crossroads, another blank notepad where you get to write your own tale – a tale of one doctor on a journey of a lifetime.  I can’t wait to read it.

I invite you to let me help you craft your masterpiece just like I’ve done with so many other Doctors before.  They chose to not put off their life until some elusive future date.  They chose to have my expert help to reverse engineering their business to facilitate their lives, their goals, their dreams, and their aspirations.
