When “Growth” Is Not The Answer

Sometimes Doctors misinterpret my intention for “growth.”  Meaning they make it out as though I think their practice should always get bigger, bigger, bigger.  And actually, that’s quite the opposite of what I want.

Yes, I want you to grow but growth often can come without it having anything to do with size (i.e. how many ops or team members or days or patients or procedures).

We don’t have to grow any of that to grow the financial success of your practice and especially to grow your profitability.

It is very often I begin first by saying we need fewer patients per day, per column, per month, per whatever – in terms of being able to slow down and have real conversations in order to actually comprehensively diagnosis.

There are a multitude of ways to grow your practice and that is why it is such a personal thing.  Which is the reason my last two Weekly Reports focused on your 2020 vision and what you want to see happen being based on your own decision and preference.

In fact, that is exactly what I’ll help you do in my 2020 Practice Success Blueprint.  I have just a few more positions left this month if you are up for the challenge to have a thought-provoking and vision-clarifying discussion with me about your future.

Now, there is something to be said for the fact that your goals, preferences, and desires do require certain things.  You can’t say you want something but then not be willing to do what it takes.  I mean, you can, but you will be disappointed.

It is true that expectations are everything and your decisions must align with your actions.

Moreover, the giant mindshift that I help my Doctors with is that they get to choose and be in control over how they want to practice.  Primarily because the math formula that is inside of your practice can be expanded and made more profitable without you having to work more or harder.

Which brings me to the point of this week’s Report – one I am famous for making – is that sometimes the greatest gift you can give to yourself is to decide NOT to do something.  Or even to do less.

One of my mentors use to say his New Year’s goal was to peel off a resolution not add one, to lessen his obligations not gain more, and to otherwise simplify his life.

For my Wealth Groups, every year we ritualistically ask the same two questions…

What do you want to do, be, have MORE OF and what do you want to do, be, have LESS OF in the coming twelve months?

Now, that has to be anchored against your goals and it ought to be realistically and strategically looked at, not just random opinion or mood-based decision.

However, it is your life and if you want more time off, time to read, time to vacation, time for family, time for hobbies, etc then by default you have to have less of something else.

The same goes for MORE MONEY.  You may need to then have MORE of something (profit, A-Patients, higher value of your time), then by default you then need less clutter in your schedule, less of patients that don’t want to do anything, less team members that are in your way of creating life changing diagnostic values on a daily basis.

This is THE way to plan and to create something that is practical.  You have the ability to execute in a way that you will be setting yourself up for success.  That is the point of any New Year.

Now, I can elaborate on this by saying that this coming year don’t feel compelled to think or believe that “GROWTH” is always about “MORE.”

I want you to grow in your beliefs, your confidence, your ability, your lifestyle, your balance, your peace of mind and everything else.

I want you to grow your profit.  I want you to become more valuable to yourself.  I want your practice to serve as a vehicle to create wealth in your life.

All of that GROWTH doesn’t have to come with MORE of anything that you’d prefer otherwise.  It is not just about MORE in life.  It is about strategic decisions that keep your life in balance and in harmony with your responsibilities and the rewards those responsibilities are designed to provide you with.

So, I ask you today for next year, what are your decisions?  Maybe you don’t hire someone, maybe you do, maybe you don’t add an op, maybe you do, maybe you cut back the array of services instead of adding more, maybe you don’t.

There are two sides to every coin and every decision, interesting how life is that way.  The morale of the story is that there is no default and automatic answer to anything.  There is only cause and effect; as we talk about here every single week.

The power is in your hands and you get to decide not only the result you want – the effect – you also get to decide the cause – the way in which you want to bring the vision to life.

And that my friend is what Business Ownership is all about.  That is what self-reliance is all about.  That is what entrepreneurship in Dentistry is all about.

As we turn the corner into the new year, don’t neglect the most valuable currency of all: your time.  With every day, you get to do whatever you want with them.  Invest them wisely and remember that growth for the sake of growth isn’t all it’s cut out to be.  The balance between what you ‘invest’ your self into and what you get back out of it (in joy, fulfillment, progress, financials), all are deliberate decisions.

Just like we talk about in dentistry, it is always about the quality over the quantity, the value over the volume, the profit over the production.  I really want to direct your focus to that in 2020 and emphasize to you that the quality, value, and profit in your decisions that will benefit your life is what matters most.

This is why every new year is the perfect time to refocus and double check your own compass to make sure your practice is taking you where you want to go and that everything aligns towards your principles.

Remember a “bigger vision” doesn’t always have to mean a bigger practice.  It can mean anything you want it to mean.  I hope you always DREAM BIGGER and BELIEVE MORE in 2020 and beyond!

And you know there is nothing more important in life than getting to where you want to go faster because that gives you more time to enjoy it.

This is my number one objective (without stress or complication but with clarity and support), when I help you build your 2020 Practice Success Blueprint.  It is always about how it serves your life and your greater visions; not how you can serve your practice.

The only way in life to expedite your state of ideal and reach your potential is to shortcut the process by not trying to do it yourself.  Allow me to show you the way with my vast experience and scope of achievements with my doctors.  I want to be the guide and trusted advisory to ensure you implement your vision into reality.

If you accept my gift of my 2020 Practice Success Blueprint, you will look back on it, on this, on me as one of the single greatest turning points in your career.  While that is a bold statement, I’d say bold is the only way to get you to the next level of practicing, living, enjoying, and profiting like never before.

As the year comes to an end, the questions to ask are: what’s next for you, what will be different in 2020, what does ‘growth’ look like – and more importantly – how will you choose to bring it to life?  Allow me to show you the way…
