I talk often about playing to win.\u00a0 It may seem obvious to some (but not enough), that it\u2019s the only way to play and, certainly, the only way to win.\u00a0 This must be ingrained in the culture of your practice.<\/p>\n

What is winning?<\/p>\n

It isn\u2019t getting through the day.<\/p>\n

It isn\u2019t seeing a lot of patients.<\/p>\n

It isn\u2019t hitting your minimums.<\/p>\n

It isn\u2019t a lot of things.<\/p>\n

Winning is about achieving your potential in both financial terms and in your patients\u2019 mouths.\u00a0 You know this.\u00a0 You wouldn\u2019t be here reading this right now if you struggled with this concept.<\/p>\n

You win by helping others, by helping your patients get healthy.<\/p>\n

If you are winning now, it\u2019s because of the trust, influence and relationship you have with your patients.\u00a0 Good for you.\u00a0 Anything less than that is unacceptable.<\/p>\n

What we are going to do over the next few weeks is dive deeper into characteristics of championship teams and see what you can do to improve yours.<\/p>\n

First and foremost, each player on the team must have a dedicated and committed ownership over their respective responsibilities.\u00a0 This is not just a mentality.\u00a0 This is a reality.<\/p>\n

You ask yourself today, \u201cWhat do I own?\u201d\u00a0 The answer should be an outcome based on your performance that goes above and beyond just showing up and seeing patients.<\/p>\n

The key of this ownership is it must attach back to the goal of winning.\u00a0 Everyone\u2019s critical contribution has to drive the overall goal of the practice: helping patients get healthy and growing profitably.<\/p>\n

This is supported by each team member\u2019s individual abilities and strengths.\u00a0 The growth comes from continuing to develop these skills both in dentistry and in dealing with people in general.<\/p>\n

If someone does not have a clearly defined and specific metric to track back to her\/his ownership piece within the practice, then she\/he has no way to monitor any progress towards the success of your team.<\/p>\n

Champions want this.\u00a0 They want to keep score.\u00a0 They want to know how they are doing.\u00a0 They thrive off of challenge and opportunity.<\/p>\n

Today ask yourselves three questions\u2026<\/p>\n


1. What outcome do I have full responsibility over in order to help my team win every day?<\/p>\n

2. How do I track and quantify this in order to hold myself accountable?<\/p>\n

And\u2026<\/p>\n

3. What can I do right now to consistently improve for the benefit of my team and patients?<\/p>\n

These questions matter and should be revisited frequently.<\/p>\n
