If I had to boil everything down into one powerful strategy to help you help more patients, it would be this one. \u00a0I ought to write an entire book on just this one single concept \u2013 but it would be over in three words\u2026<\/p>\n

Tell The Truth.<\/p>\n

I know it seems so simple, but the power of truth is that, first and foremost. \u00a0It is the easiest thing to do and it happens to be the most authentic. \u00a0There are no tricks or gimmicks or polished tactics or anything else that work as well as being honest.<\/p>\n

Now, of course, I know you have integrity and consider yourself a \u201cgood person.\u201d \u00a0I have no doubt about that, but that isn\u2019t exactly the context that I mean when I\u2019m talking about \u201ctruth-telling\u201d in dentistry.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what I am telling you\u2026<\/p>\n

Tell the truth about the problems in the patients\u2019 mouths.<\/p>\n

Tell the truth about the reality of insurance.<\/p>\n

Tell the truth about the patients\u2019 responsibilities.<\/p>\n

Tell the truth about the possibilities and what you can do to help them.<\/p>\n

Truth can be tough and it can be touching. \u00a0It is often both.<\/p>\n

Patients really just need to hear it. \u00a0It is what removes the feeling of \u201cbeing sold\u201d and allows the patients to accept their relationships with you for what it really should be \u2013 guidance and direction on what is in their best interests.<\/p>\n

So often, we see selling as manipulation of someone else\u2019s mind to get them to do something they don\u2019t want to do \u2013 which is the complete opposite of what it means to tell the truth. \u00a0Done right, you should be influencing patients to do something in their best interests in order to get an outcome that they do in fact want.<\/p>\n

Over the past few weeks, I have given you the concepts and strategies to improve patient outcomes, follow-through, compliance and case acceptance. \u00a0Every single one of those works even better when you just put the truth behind it.<\/p>\n

My favorite statement is, \u201cJust tell your patients the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2026about anything they ask and about everything they need to hear.<\/p>\n

Team Members and Doctors alike shy away from the truth often unintentionally because they are afraid of what a patient will think or because they think it will deter them from accepting treatment. \u00a0When actually, 100% of the time, the opposite is true.<\/p>\n

Bold, raw, real honesty always wins because it is the thing that builds the trust the fastest and the strongest. \u00a0It is what will solidify your patients\u2019 relationships with you.<\/p>\n

Think deeply in your practice (both individually and as a whole), where do you NOT use \u201ctruth\u201d enough and how you could effectively improve outcomes with patients by being more transparent about the reality.<\/p>\n

Why this matters so much (other than it being the right way to take care of people, do business and build relationships), is because when you do the opposite it actually comes across like you are hiding something or you aren\u2019t fully disclosing all the details.<\/p>\n

Of course, we know you aren\u2019t going to lie about anything \u2013 and people have a false impression that to NOT tell the truth is to LIE \u2013 but life isn\u2019t so black and white. \u00a0There is a whole lot of grey; especially with patients\u2019 understanding of dentistry.<\/p>\n

So, if they ask \u201cis my insurance going to cover it?\u201d \u00a0When we beat around the bush, it makes the patient doubt everything else instead of just saying \u201cnot a chance, because it isn\u2019t supposed to.\u201d<\/p>\n

You know that expression \u201cif you see something, say something;\u201d that is how you must approach dentistry. \u00a0If you see a problem or an opportunity for improved health, then tell them about it.<\/p>\n

That is what I mean about telling the truth, always. \u00a0That way, you don\u2019t have to worry about missing anything or forgetting anything and your patients will reward you with great appreciation.<\/p>\n

Here is one final tip to throw you into your discussion and deliberation on ways you can improve your conversations with patients using this principle \u2013 being honest with patients saves you time! \u00a0And everyone wins when you\u2019re more efficient.<\/p>\n

Go through your patient engagements where you come up short and avoid things that need to be said to patients. \u00a0Remember, patients only know the things we tell them, show them and help them experience.<\/p>\n
