There really is an underlying reason why most Doctors never reach their real potential inside of their practice \u2013 that is those who actually do wish to do better.<\/p>\n

We know why the ones that just settle and could care less whether they do any better or maybe they don\u2019t even believe it is possible to improve.\u00a0 They think they are already as far as they can get.\u00a0 It\u2019s obvious why they get stuck and then ever so slowly go backwards or maybe dramatically go backwards.<\/p>\n

Often a \u201closing practice\u201d is not first seen in the numbers.\u00a0 No, actually you can coast for a long time without noticing the fact that the practice is being sustained on a very unhealthy foundation where there are cracks and crumbles at the base.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what I mean.\u00a0 You might not realize or recognize the poor and detrimental retention of your patients but you are getting by every month and year.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t occur to you to check and see what your net gain in patient count is or if your patient value is going up or down on an average every year.<\/p>\n

I have some very important news for you\u2026<\/p>\n

If you keep doing the same work on the same patients eventually you will run out of teeth to fix.\u00a0 On the other hand, if you are doing all the same work on different patients then you won\u2019t ever get ahead either.<\/p>\n

You really must have a practice growing in parallel on both of these fronts if you want to get to the maximization of profitability and leverage your time so you can break free from the pure volume trap.<\/p>\n

Value must go up on average for every new patient and you must have increases in retention.\u00a0 If you are a specialist and see every patient as a \u201cnew patient\u201d then you swap the word \u201cretention\u201d for \u201creferral\u201d and it\u2019s all the same.<\/p>\n

Continuation of care.<\/p>\n

Keeping patients in motion.<\/p>\n

Acceleration of case acceptance.<\/p>\n

Achieving completion of treatment.<\/p>\n

I can go on with my buzzwords.\u00a0 Most practices achieve success (if they do) completely and totally by accident.\u00a0 And therefore there is no deliberate control over the outcomes and that results in zero ability to leverage \u2013 ANYTHING.<\/p>\n

Look, the point I\u2019m trying to make is unless you have a handle on your practice and know what is going on underneath it all, behind the scenes, you aren\u2019t practicing on purpose.<\/p>\n

Now, you don\u2019t have to DO anything extra.\u00a0 I\u2019m not talking about \u201cplaying manager\u201d or even \u201crunning the business.\u201d\u00a0 In fact, the more you know what I\u2019m talking about here, the less time you have to be involved in anything but the dentistry.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m saying that even a practice growing slightly (unless you are exactly where you want to be in terms of your numbers and income), then it\u2019s quite possible you actually are going backwards if you look at the future indicators that actually mean something.<\/p>\n

The Doctors doing nothing, striving for nothing, have zero ambition obviously aren\u2019t going to experience any growth or take any responsibility for increase in profit.\u00a0 I don\u2019t judge and I\u2019m not talking to \u2018that\u2019 doctor; nor is that doctor here hanging out with me anyways.<\/p>\n

The doctors I\u2019m focused on and want to help are ambitious minded, have unfinished business to take care of in terms of what they know is possible, they want to win bigger and have more fun while doing it.<\/p>\n

That Doctor is you, obviously, you\u2019re here reading this.<\/p>\n

So, why then is success often fleeting or elusive\u2026<\/p>\n

It\u2019s because of one simple and yet very damaging reason.<\/p>\n

They \u2013 maybe you \u2013 are always changing lanes, switching gears, taking detours on their paths towards their goals.\u00a0 Call it distraction or lack of focus or just the search for the ever-greener grass of dentistry.<\/p>\n

The greener grass comes in many different shades and styles and make-up and let me assure you it all requires sun, rain, seeds, sod and fertilizer.<\/p>\n

The other big problem with \u201cgreener grass\u201d is that it keeps you from focusing on the core principles, the basics and it almost always drives you straight into the hole of making things harder than what they need to be.<\/p>\n

Of course, they have to be hard because why else would you need to buy the next bag of tricks or technology or marketing or consultant or start tearing up your grass to replace someone else\u2019s if it was easy to take care of your own.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the deal: don\u2019t buy the grass.\u00a0 You\u2019ve already got grass.\u00a0 It just isn\u2019t necessary to start over.\u00a0 You\u2019ve gotten this far\u2026 let\u2019s go to work on making it better, on defining what you want, and then organizing the key principles around that vision.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m talking about and reiterating what I said to you last week.\u00a0 The Five Pillars Of Success regardless of the type of practice, clinical philosophy, category of patient, business model or shade of green that the grass is it really boils down to these\u2026<\/p>\n

Motivate the Team<\/p>\n

Educate the Patient<\/p>\n

Diagnosis the Dentistry<\/p>\n

Cultivate Case Acceptance<\/p>\n

Profitable Practice Formula<\/p>\n
