What better way to finish this year than talking about how your practice can deliver you incredible autonomy for your life.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have often quoted here that the vast majority of doctors tell me one of their greatest motivations to become a dentist (aside from helping people), is to have control over their schedules and a more conducive work life balance for their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They then go on to share one of three realities\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, they outline all the ways they feel this has eluded them.  That their practice and life are not balanced because they are having to work too many hours or spend too much time managing or they can never leave on vacation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Often these are habits that have crept in overtime and just become a routine that\u2019s never questioned.  It doesn\u2019t have to be this way.  I promise you and, as a matter of fact, every single year you should ask yourself how can you enhance your own autonomy and how can you make level up your freedom from your practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second reality is how they had balance and autonomy but they can\u2019t seem to make it sustainable.  It ebbs and flows when they are shorthanded, when they have turnover, or an influx of patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The third and finally alternative is the biggest frustration from most practice owners.  It\u2019s not that they can\u2019t set their own schedule or that they don\u2019t believe they could work less, it\u2019s that they don\u2019t feel they can do all of those things and not take a financial hit and struggle as a result of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They believe, mostly because it\u2019s the experience they have lived out, that it can only be one or the other.  That you have to sacrifice autonomy for money or money for autonomy.  There is no path where you can have both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The doctors that make the most money don\u2019t do it on accident.  The practices that have the greatest profit aren\u2019t making it happen without a plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the final day of 2021, I want to give you the top three things you can commit to make your best year ever by your own definition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, increase autonomy by taking more control over everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Predetermine what you want your income to be.  Know your overhead and then stack on top your income and work backwards from that number to your hourly run rate you must achieve.  Then strategize to create the dentistry that allows you to produce at that level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second, stop allowing anyone or anything else to tell you what you can or can\u2019t do.  You get to decide what you want and how you want things to go.  How you want your practice to run and how you want your life to look.  Most doctors don\u2019t fight hard enough for their preferences until it\u2019s too late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third, and this is vitally important, choose to live and practice guilt free.  Be proud of the business that you have built and invested in that affords you the ability and opportunity to do it on your own terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bottom line is you can make money a lot of different ways \u2013 in dentistry \u2013 and you can either let it be random or you can make it strategic.  You get to decide what will define your practice in the new year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
