Over the last few weeks, we have been reviewing the key leverage points for practice growth. The last one is the one that has the greatest implication\u2026 Schedule Control. The greatest equalizer of life is the utilization (or the waste) of time. How one invests their time and the value you place on<\/em> it will be the value they place in<\/em> it. The more discipline there is with that, the greater the return on life you\u2019ll have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coming up in a future issue, I\u2019ll go in-depth on my Value Based Schedule Structure that gives you the ability to move into a new level of performance, profitability, and overall potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, I want to pause our series and shift gears as we approach an important date in the calendar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we head into next week\u2019s celebration of Independence and you remember those that made it possible, I want to also draw your reflection to yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether it\u2019s a recent memory or a distant one, you chose not just to become a doctor but an Independent Private Practice Dentist owning your own business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are indeed a celebration of America, in and of yourself. Congratulations! You should feel deep pride for what you\u2019ve created and, with that, an even stronger sense of resolve to continue to control your life, your practice, and your future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, I challenge you to really assess whether your practice has delivered the independence for your life that you initially desired when you first chose to become a practice owner. Many doctors are at the mercy of their practice, not actually in control over it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

True independence goes beyond owning the practice and into how the practice is serving as a catalyst for the life you want outside its walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have talked a lot about independence both in concept and in reality. Next week, as we celebrate our country\u2019s independence, it\u2019s the perfect opportunity to take full advantage of the freedoms you have and design the type of life you want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It boils down to whether you want more success by your own definition or you are completely content with just more of the same. Since you are reading this, I can surmise that you are still in pursuit of a better, faster, smarter, more profitable way to practice by utilizing leverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In dentistry, you can leverage your time and schedule, you can leverage your team and patients, and you can leverage your profits and business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the greatest form of leverage is the knowledge of other people who have done what you want to do. So many doctors let their past experiences get in the way of their future potential and this is a shame because nothing in the past matters; not failed experiences nor successes, you are only as good as your future results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other half of doctors are doing well and consider themselves at the top of their game but feeling completely stuck in that the only way to grow beyond where they are at is a way that they don\u2019t want \u2013 and therefore feel lost and stagnated as there is nothing more they can do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is often seen as expansion of hours (and expansion of overhead), building out more space, and adding volume on top of volume. This just sounds silly when you are already stressed out and running full throttle. Some, heaven forbid, are considering adding insurance plans to get more patients when the problem is not with having enough patient opportunities, it\u2019s with not being able to cultivate enough dentistry and case acceptance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These doctors soon realize that more volume, quantity, hours, patients, space, team and often even production is never the right answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regardless of what type of practice you have today and how you would categorize yourself, going against the grain is what being independent is all about, not having to conform to \u2018norms\u2019 or \u2018trends\u2019 or \u2018others\u2019 ideals\u2019 just for the sake of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, when I ask you what are you declaring independence from, it goes deeper than just \u2018what\u2019 to \u2018how\u2019 you want to practice and most importantly to the \u2018why\u2019 of your choices and decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next week, we celebrate the freedom we have in our great country and yet so many doctors are not free at all. They are completely imprisoned by their practices and the industry as a whole. This stems from their lack of belief in what\u2019s possible and usually from their either doubt or skepticism or lack of exposure to anything but what they already know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The greatest American qualities are asking questions, being curious, challenging the status-quo, prioritizing ingenuity and innovation, never wavering on their resolve, and relentlessness pursuit of life, liberty and happiness. Nothing is guaranteed except the opportunity to take action, to be independent, to define your success, and to take control of your life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My challenge to you is never settle, never stop being true to yourself, practice on your own terms and reach the greatest independence of them all in dentistry and in life by never having any \u201chave-to\u2019s\u201d but everything because you want to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
