Of course it does. Relationships matter. Trust matters. Consistency matters. Follow-up matters. Re-engagement matters. Caring for people over time matters.

But where people get confused is this: they begin treating nurturing as an excuse for not fully leading the patient in the first place.

I hear this all the time. “We like to start with one thing first and build trust.” Or, “We just wanted to do something smaller and then circle back later.” Or, “We don’t want to overwhelm them, so we ease into it over time.”

Let me say this very clearly: there are situations where staged care makes sense. There are situations where timing, finances, priorities, emotions, and life circumstances all affect how quickly someone moves forward. That part is true.

However, what is not true is using those realities as a strategy of passivity. What is not true is believing that the best way to build trust is to withhold the full picture. What is not true is assuming that patients need months or years of casual exposure before they are capable of saying yes to meaningful dentistry. And what is especially not true is pretending that delay itself is a sophisticated patient relationship strategy.

Too often, what gets labeled as nurturing is really just hesitation. It is uncertainty. It is lack of leadership. It is fear disguised as patience. It is a passive approach that sounds thoughtful on the surface but is actually masking a lack of bold, complete, confident treatment planning from the start.

Real nurturing does not begin after we avoid the truth. Real nurturing begins when we tell the truth fully and then walk with the patient through the process of understanding it, valuing it, and moving toward it.

The practices that go all in on helping patients understand the full picture do more dentistry, reach bigger goals, create greater value, and help more people. They do it consistently. They do it predictably. They do it because they have made a decision that showing patients the complete truth is part of how they serve.

They understand that optimal, proactive, preventative, comprehensive health becomes more valuable the sooner a patient gets there, not the longer it takes.

Conversely, delay is not neutral. Delay means more time living with a compromised condition. Delay means more time allowing dysfunction to continue. Delay means more time without the benefits of the care we know could improve health, comfort, confidence, function, peace of mind, and quality of life.

If we really believe in what comprehensive care does for people, then why would we ever treat delay as our preferred pathway?

The nurturing question, then, is not “How long should we wait?” The nurturing question is “What can we do to help this patient engage more deeply and move forward sooner?”

That leads us to examine what we are saying and how we are saying it. It leads us to examine whether the patient truly understands their condition, their choices, and their future options. It leads us to examine whether the experience we are creating invites ownership or passivity.

Make the patient feel known. Make the patient feel heard. Make the patient feel that we understand their goals. Make the patient feel that our recommendations are personal, thoughtful, and in their best interest. Make the patient feel that our entire team is aligned. Make the patient feel that we are paying attention. Make the patient feel that they matter.

If we truly want to build a relationship with our patients, we focus on the one thing that builds trust more powerfully than almost anything else: tell them the truth.

Tell them the truth fully. Tell them the truth clearly. Tell them the truth early. Tell them the truth with warmth. Tell them the truth with confidence. Tell them the truth in a way that makes it clear we are for them, not against them. And then do not stop there. Encourage them. Motivate them. Re-engage them. Help them move as quickly as possible toward the benefits of that truth.

So this week, I want you to do something. Pick one patient on today’s schedule or tomorrow’s schedule who has unfinished treatment, unscheduled treatment, or a conversation that needs to happen. Before they leave, have one honest, caring, complete conversation about what matters for their health. Not a sales pitch. Not a pressure tactic. Just a clear, confident, compassionate moment of leadership. Tell them the truth. Help them see the full picture. Ask them what matters to them. Help them connect the dentistry to their life. And then see what happens when we stop waiting for trust to magically appear and start building it on purpose.

Trust does not have to be slow, nurturing does not have to be timid, and comprehensive care does not have to wait nearly as long as many practices have trained themselves to believe.

Watch what happens when our relationships are no longer based on waiting, but on purposeful, positive, truth-filled leadership. That is how we nurture patients and that is how we help far more of them say yes to the care that can truly change their lives.

Let’s talk honestly today about something that gets misunderstood in far too many practices, and because it gets misunderstood, it quietly limits growth, case acceptance, patient health, and the overall level of impact we are capable of making together.
