It does not begin when the treatment plan is presented. It does not begin when the financial options are explained. It does not even begin when the patient first arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The patient conversation begins first in our own minds.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It begins with what we believe about dentistry. It begins with what we believe about health. It begins with what we believe the patient deserves. It begins with whether we see our role as simply reacting to what a patient came in for today or whether we see our role as guiding them toward what is possible for their long-term health, confidence, comfort, and quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That distinction matters because patients can only say yes to what they have been given a real opportunity to understand, value, and choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They cannot say yes to the health they were never educated about. They cannot say yes to the possibilities they were never shown. They cannot say yes to the outcome no one had the time, confidence, or conviction to help them see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where we have to be honest with ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes we think we are helping patients by not actually helping them. We soften the message. We skip the full conversation. We assume they cannot afford it. We assume they are not interested. We assume they are too busy, too skeptical, too overwhelmed, or too unlikely to say yes. <strong>We pre-judge their decision before they ever get the chance to make it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While that may feel compassionate in the moment, it is not compassionate in the long run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>True compassion is not withholding information. True compassion is not lowering the standard because we are uncomfortable. True compassion is not deciding for the patient what they should value, what they can afford, what they deserve, or what they are ready to hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>True compassion is being honest, thorough, respectful, and clear.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every patient deserves to know the truth about where they are, where they could be, what is possible, what happens if they wait, and what life could look like if they move forward. Every patient deserves to understand their current state of health and their ideal state of health. Every patient deserves to have someone in their corner who believes enough in the value of what is possible to take the time to explain it well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, these patient conversations are only as good as the time and attention we give them<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the schedule is chaotic, the conversations suffer. If our team is rushed, the patient feels it. If we are bouncing from room to room without enough space to think, connect, and lead\u2026 the patient experience becomes transactional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why schedule control is not just an operational issue. It is a patient care issue. The schedule either supports the kind of dentistry we believe in or it works against it. It either gives us room to educate, diagnose, communicate, and guide or it squeezes those things into whatever time is left over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This does not mean every patient needs the same visit, the same pathway, or the same conversation. Of course not. Championship teams customize care. They personalize the experience. They meet patients where they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, meeting patients where they are does not mean leaving them there. Our responsibility is to understand where they are and then help them see where they could go. That requires belief, that requires clarity, that requires consistency, and yes, it requires time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this week\u2019s Huddle Exercise, we are going to do something uncomfortable but powerful. Gather the team for 10 minutes and answer these questions out loud:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>What assumptions are we making about our patients before we even have the conversation?<\/strong> Are we deciding for them what they can afford, what they value, or what they are ready to hear? Name one assumption we need to stop making.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Does our schedule support meaningful conversations or does it make them feel like an interruption?<\/strong> Be honest, if you had to rate our current schedule on a scale of 1 to 10 for giving us the time and space to educate and guide patients well, what number would you give it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pick one patient on today&#8217;s schedule.<\/strong> Before they arrive, ask yourself: what is the gap between where they are and where they could be? What is one thing we need to make sure they understand today that they might not already know?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Patients value what we value. They pay attention to what we emphasize. They believe more deeply when we believe more clearly. They engage more fully when we are prepared, present, and purposeful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>These patient conversation start before the patient conversation.<\/strong> It starts with what we believe, it starts with what we value, and it starts with what we are willing to make time for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we bring those things together with intention and execution, we do more than present treatment.
