This week, I want to go one layer deeper because winning doesn&#8217;t start when the patient says yes. It starts long before that. It starts in your head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most important conversation you&#8217;ll have today isn&#8217;t with a patient. It isn&#8217;t with a teammate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s the conversation you&#8217;re having with yourself right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That internal conversation shapes everything else. The way you think influences the way you speak. The way you speak influences the way you act. The way you act becomes your habits. And over time, those habits become our culture. The culture our patients experience every day is simply the visible expression of what each of us has been believing all along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think about how often we quietly make predictions before anything has even happened. We tell ourselves the schedule is impossible. That a patient probably won&#8217;t move forward. That someone is going to be difficult. That insurance will become another obstacle. None of those things have happened yet, but we&#8217;ve already allowed them to influence our attitude. Without realizing it, we&#8217;ve begun preparing ourselves for frustration instead of preparing ourselves for success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leadership is about deciding how we&#8217;re going to respond to reality before it arrives. That&#8217;s a choice every one of us gets to make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;ve watched this happen in practices all over the country. Walk into one office and you can feel the negativity before anyone says a word. People expect problems, so problems seem to find them. Conversations revolve around obstacles instead of opportunities. Before long, that mindset becomes normal, and everyone begins believing that&#8217;s simply the way dentistry is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then you visit another practice that faces the very same challenges, yet the atmosphere couldn&#8217;t be more different. The team doesn&#8217;t deny reality. They simply refuse to let reality define their attitude. They look for solutions. They encourage one another. They speak with confidence. They expect good things because they&#8217;ve trained themselves to focus on what they can influence rather than what they can&#8217;t. The circumstances may be similar, but the outcomes are dramatically different because the thinking is different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That should encourage every one of us because it reminds us that culture isn&#8217;t something that just happens. We create it. Every conversation we have with ourselves and every conversation we have with one another is either strengthening the culture we want or weakening it. There really isn&#8217;t a middle ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why the team is Patient Number One. Before we can help patients believe in what&#8217;s possible for their health, we have to believe in what&#8217;s possible for one another. We have to speak life into each other. We have to encourage one another when the day becomes difficult. We have to remind each other why we chose this profession in the first place. Healthy teams don&#8217;t happen because everyone has a good day. Healthy teams happen because they choose to protect one another&#8217;s mindset on the difficult days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you move through this week, I want to challenge you to become more aware of the conversations taking place inside your own mind. When you catch yourself assuming the worst, stop and ask yourself whether you&#8217;ve confused an assumption with reality. When you find yourself focusing on what you can&#8217;t control, intentionally shift your attention to what you can control. You can always control your preparation. You can always control your attitude. You can always control the effort you bring to your teammates and your patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patients don&#8217;t simply hear the words we say. They feel the belief behind those words. If we truly believe in the care we&#8217;re providing, they&#8217;ll hear confidence. If we genuinely believe they&#8217;re capable of becoming healthier, they&#8217;ll feel hope. Our thoughts have a way of showing up in every conversation we have, whether we realize it or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protecting your mindset is not a personal exercise. It&#8217;s a leadership responsibility. The way you think influences the way you lead, and the way you lead influences every patient and every teammate you encounter this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Huddle Exercise: Reframe One Thought This Week<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify one negative assumption you tend to make before your day even begins (about the schedule, a patient, insurance, or a situation.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Write down what you assume will happen. Then write down what you want to happen instead.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This week, every time you catch yourself making that assumption, stop and replace it with the belief you want to be true.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before we begin another busy Monday, make one commitment to yourself. Refuse to let negative assumptions write the story of your day before your day has even begun. Choose to believe the best about your teammates. Choose to believe the best about your patients. Choose to believe the best about yourself. Then let your actions throughout the week prove that those beliefs were well placed. That is how you plant seeds of success.
