Kids are deciding who they want to become for Halloween, stores are filled with costumes, and for one night people get to step into another identity just for fun. There&#8217;s nothing wrong with that kind of mask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The masks I want to talk about this Monday are different. We sometimes wear them without realizing it, and unlike a Halloween costume, they can follow us into the practice every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s the mask of being busy, where we move quickly enough that no one can tell we&#8217;ve stopped being fully present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s the mask of professionalism, where we become so polished that patients stop feeling the human being underneath the words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s the mask of experience, where we assume we already know what a patient is going to say because we&#8217;ve heard something similar a thousand times before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s even the mask of positivity, where a team smiles on the surface while avoiding a conversation that everyone knows needs to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of these masks make someone a bad teammate. They&#8217;re usually forms of protection. The problem is that what protects us from discomfort can also separate us from the people we&#8217;re trying to lead and serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Patients know when a conversation is real.<\/strong> They may not know our systems, understand our clinical language, or recognize all the skill involved in what we do, but they know when someone is listening to them. They know when a question is being asked because the answer actually matters. They know when the doctor is talking with them instead of at them. They know when the person discussing treatment believes in the recommendation and when that person is simply moving through the next step of a process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trust grows when people feel that the person in front of them is genuinely there with them. That&#8217;s why authenticity is not a soft concept in a great practice; <strong>it&#8217;s a performance advantage.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strongest teams don&#8217;t become robotic in the name of consistency. They use systems to make sure important things happen and then they bring themselves into those systems. A handoff should have structure but it shouldn&#8217;t sound memorized. A treatment conversation should follow principles but it should still belong to the patient having it. A morning huddle should organize the day but it should also give people permission to speak honestly about where help is needed and where an opportunity might otherwise be missed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same is true inside the team. If someone is overwhelmed, pretending everything is fine doesn&#8217;t make the team stronger. If a system is repeatedly failing, working around it forever doesn&#8217;t make the problem disappear. If there&#8217;s tension between two people, smiling in front of patients while allowing resentment to grow behind the scenes eventually costs everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Great cultures are not cultures without problems. They&#8217;re cultures where people care enough about the mission and about one another to deal with problems while they&#8217;re still solvable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I want you to take this idea directly into your patient conversations this week. Take off the need to sound perfect and instead become more interested in understanding than impressing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a patient hesitates, don&#8217;t rush to fill the silence with another explanation. When someone says they need to think about treatment, become curious about what they need to think about. When someone says money is the issue, don&#8217;t immediately assume you understand what that means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is not to corner someone into an answer. The goal is to remove enough distance that an honest conversation can finally happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your exercise this week is simple\u2026 Before you leave today, name one mask you&#8217;ve been wearing and with whom. Decide you&#8217;re going to drop that mask and become more real. Say it out loud to the team to hold you accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look for the masks that keep your conversations safe but shallow. Look for the routines you&#8217;ve stopped thinking about. Look for the places where everyone knows something but nobody says it. Then have the courage to become a little more real with one another and with your patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Halloween masks are supposed to come off at the end of the night. Make sure the unnecessary ones in your practice come off too. Let patients meet the confident, caring human beings behind the titles. Let teammates know when you need them and when you appreciate them. Let the truth into the room before assumptions fill the space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s a pretty good transformation to make before October is over.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By the middle of October, masks are everywhere.
