Today, we are going to talk about something very important.\u00a0 So important that it is unbelievable and quite frankly a real shame that this is not considered a priority or even on doctors\u2019 radars throughout their careers.\u00a0 It is not discussed, taught or even brought up in school.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s how to get out.<\/p>\n

Or what to do if something bad happens.<\/p>\n

Or how to save money to be able to retire some day.<\/p>\n

Or the best way to exit or transition your practice in the future.<\/p>\n

Or how to work part time without sacrificing your income.<\/p>\n

The fact is: you may (if you are like most), believe you are going to work until you can\u2019t work anymore; but you can\u2019t possibly believe that you will rely on dentistry your entire life for the income necessary to live on.<\/p>\n

At some point the fruits of your labor should provide seeds to create a fortune that then sustains you for your lifetime.\u00a0 Dentistry is not just about having a \u2018great lifestyle\u2019 and making a higher income than most.\u00a0 It is and should be about being responsible with your finances and your career which means\u2026<\/p>\n

Career Planning<\/p>\n

Imagine that, the things they told you in high school, maybe college and then you said all over again to your kids.<\/p>\n

This time we aren\u2019t talking about career planning as in what to do for your career but we are talking about career exiting or what to do now that you have had your career.<\/p>\n

We are going to be exploring this throughout the next few Weekly Reports so pay attention and please, for your own benefit, don\u2019t miss anything.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a great question, isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 Because you are the painter of your own life\u2019s canvas.\u00a0 You are the architect of your own business decisions.<\/p>\n

Of course, you need help bringing them to life and that\u2019s exactly what I\u2019m here for and what I\u2019m going to do to help be your guide over the next few weeks.<\/p>\n

It really doesn\u2019t matter which decade of your career you are in \u2013 this question applies!\u00a0 What\u2019s next for you can be determined by so many things\u2026<\/p>\n

Preferences<\/p>\n

Lifestyle<\/p>\n

Family<\/p>\n

Health<\/p>\n

And of course financial circumstances<\/p>\n

What you don\u2019t want to be the determinant of your \u201cwhat\u2019s next\u201d are industry trends or variables forcing you to settle or practice against what you want.<\/p>\n

I call the opposite of all of those: practicing on your own terms.<\/p>\n

That is what you want to focus your considerations on when answering this questions.\u00a0 What do you want those terms to be<\/p>\n

How long?<\/p>\n

How much?<\/p>\n

What?<\/p>\n

With who?<\/p>\n

For whom?<\/p>\n

Then you have to establish a timeline that is anchored to your results.\u00a0 You can always choose to extend the timeline or change the plans.\u00a0 That\u2019s the beauty of it \u2013 you are in control.<\/p>\n

But\u2026 You must have a timeline because otherwise no benchmarks will be met and all results will be elusive \u2013 unless they are held accountable to specific deadlines.<\/p>\n

You can\u2019t just wake up one day and think all the sudden you are going to bring things to a close.\u00a0 If you do that you are going to be at the mercy of outside forces.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t want that.\u00a0 You worked too hard and too long and it means too much to go out on someone else\u2019s terms.<\/p>\n

The only way to avoid this is to make your own decisions and to plan out the next chapter as you want it to be.<\/p>\n
