It’s time to reclaim your practice and your life by defining the freedoms that matter most.
1. Money Freedom – Define Your “Magic Number”
Let’s start with the most practical freedom: money. Here’s the deal—most doctors are spending everything they make… or close to it. The real question is: Is your income intentional or just what’s left after everyone else gets paid?
We flip the script by building your practice around your future goals not your current income.
Start by calculating:
- Your desired lifestyle (what it costs to live the life you want)
- Your extras (vacations, kids’ college, giving, fun)
- Your retirement contributions (built-in, not “leftover”)
- Your wealth goals (future passive income needs)
- And finally, add 50% for taxes (which will equate to 33%)
This total number is your Magic Number—the income your practice must generate for you to achieve your goals.
Then reverse-engineer that number:
- Divide it by 12 for your monthly target
- Add in your overhead
- Divide that by the number of clinical days you want to work
Now you have your daily production target to achieve money freedom.
And let’s not forget, I teach two streams of income:
- Active income (what you earn chairside)
- Ownership income (the wealth your practice generates even when you’re not working)
One gets spent. The other gets multiplied. That’s why you build your business to serve your goals not the other way around.
2. People Freedom – Choose Who You Work With and Who You Serve
There’s an old saying: you are the average of your five closest relationships.
Well, in your practice, that means your team. The people you’re surrounded by every day will define the quality of your life.
Ask yourself:
- Are you choosing your team—or tolerating them?
- Are you surrounded by high-caliber, growth-minded professionals—or just any body?
You want to start growing the practice? Then start by growing the people.
People freedom means choosing who you do business with—and who you do business for.
It’s not just about your team. It’s about your patients too.
As an independent practice owner, you get to choose. You don’t have to take every patient. You can attract the right patients—the ones who value health, pay in full, and want a relationship, not a discount.
You want to do meaningful work with people you love, for people you love. That’s the kind of practice worth showing up for.
People freedom is about taking ownership of your culture, your relationships, and your impact.
3. Profit Freedom – Control Your Fees and Keep What You Earn
Let’s talk about profit. You can’t do great dentistry if you’re handcuffed by low fees, insurance discounts, and shrinking margins.
When you’re operating under PPOs or third-party control, you’re giving away 30% or more off the top—before you pay your team, your bills, or yourself.
It’s unsustainable.
Profit freedom means reclaiming control of your fees so you can:
- Keep 50% of every dollar that flows through your practice
- Pay yourself what you’re worth
- Afford to hire and reward top talent
My well-known 50/50 Profit Formula means: 50% overhead and 50% net
This gives you financial stability, lifestyle flexibility, and the ability to build wealth while doing the dentistry you love.
You don’t get to choose your dentistry unless you get to choose your fees.
4. Time Freedom – Own Your Schedule, Live on Your Terms
The most valuable freedom of all? Time.
What good is money, a great team, and high profits if you don’t have the time to enjoy it? You are only truly free when you control your schedule.
The math is simple: Want to earn $100,000/month working 10 clinical days? That’s $10,000/day production.
Whether that’s done through cosmetic cases, aligners, multiple ops, or team-leveraged hygiene—it’s achievable.
Start by deciding: When you don’t want to work; then build the rest around it.
Want to be done at 4 p.m.? Want Fridays off? Want two weeks off every quarter to travel or stay home?
That’s the power of time freedom. It’s not just about dentistry—it’s about designing a life that’s aligned with your values, your family, and your purpose.
The ability to control your time is the ultimate power.
Putting It All Together: The Four Freedoms Formula
This is your revolutionary moment—the choice to step away from the treadmill and design a practice that gives you everything you want:
- Money Freedom
- People Freedom
- Profit Freedom
- Time Freedom
You want to be employed? Fine. You want to be self-employed? That’s better. But if you want to be truly free, this is how.
This is the counter-culture strategy. This is where you zig when everyone else zags. This is where you stop reacting to the industry and start engineering your own success.
It’s your independence. It’s your opportunity. It’s your chance to regain control of your future.
