Discover The Two Most Important Winning Traits For Doctors
Scott J. Manning, MBA, Weekly Report: Life Prosperity and Practice Profit
Whether it relates to your dental practice success or other areas, one of the key traits and principles of mastery that every successful person and high achiever in life has in common is the aspect of visualization. This includes not only what’s going to happen but the actual desired outcome. You see this vividly with the most elite athletes.
Last week, I challenged you to be more purposeful in every single area of your life in order to become a true Champion.
Today, I ask you to be more purposeful actually begins with more specific and well-defined goals and outcomes in the first place.
Your mission last week was to define what “your best” would be, look, feel, live like in reality. If you were at your best, would you act, what would your daily routine be, how attentive would you be with your spouse, how proactive would you be with your conversations, and how positive would you be with your communication?
I could leave you with that paragraph right there to unpack and journal each thought that comes to your mind by giving you the assignment of connecting your desired outcome with your proactive development.
We all know people (and have been guilty ourselves) of waiting for someone else to initiate something that we ‘think’ they should do.
They should reach out. They should apologize. They should already do, think, plan for A, B, C.
Well, here’s another common principle and trait of champions… take nothing for granted and leave nothing to chance. The only things CHAMPIONS accept are CONTROL and RESPONSIBILITY.
From the inception of an idea, vision, outcome, result, and execution. Essentially, it comes down to preparation and performance.
I constantly remind my Wealth Group Doctors to plan out their week. To script out their day, to visualize in specific detail, and to execute on their daily goals.
Here are two questions for you when it comes to your life and your dental practice success…
What are you leaving to chance? Who are you taking for granted?
If you want to win, then you want to control all outcomes and ensure victory. Regardless of what that requires because whatever it takes is what it takes (which happens to be the premise of a book I provided to my 2025 Eligible Wealth Candidates as required reading).
Embracing that is the first requisite of success and high achievement.
Today, I want you to commit to doubling down in order to be your best … at two key attributes…
Clarity on your desired outcomes in vivid detail. That means being more purposeful about what you are trying to achieve.
If you are vague about this, your results too will be vague. You’ll be disappointed and want to blame someone or something. In reality, though, it’s just that you did not state specifically enough what you are trying to achieve.
Second, I want you to double down on being more proactive and purposeful with your decisions.
Decisions matter. Those you make and those you don’t.
As the great Jim Rohn said, “Most people major in minor things.” That’s why their lives are always at the mercy of the trivial and fall short of their greater potential.
You can’t just want it, you have to work for it. That means that you must discipline yourself to make BIGGER, HIGH VALUE, MEANINGFUL DECISIONS.
The fun part is you are going to do exactly that same thing for your team and your patients.
Here’s the flow of things from last week to this week.
First: define your BEST SELF for each key area of your life and responsibilities.
Outline what it takes, what is required FROM YOU first. Then others as appropriate. To bring this to fruition… who do you have to become, what do you have to do, what has to take place in order to achieve your desired results.
Next, get more specific on your desired outcomes for your dental success and the main purpose for each of the key metrics in your life.
You want to achieve greater income? Why? For what? Exactly how much and when?
You want to do bigger cases? Why? What constitutes a bigger case? Above all else what are you prepared
to and actually going to do about it?
You want to have a more fulfilling or present marriage – you go first. Decide what it looks like… what are you doing to prove this?
You want to get healthier, how so? What are you willing to do, to change, to sacrifice? What’s more important than your longevity?
Here’s a trick by the way… write down your rewards, the benefits of victory, the reason why this all actually matters. This is being in pursuit of what you desire versus simply trying to incrementally improve or avoid what you don’t want.
And then finally, put in the preparation by any means necessary.
Including masterful visualization and positive expectancy of everything from where you are to where you want to be. From present you and current state to future you and ultimate arrival.
We are going to take all of this inside of your practice and tie together the two principles next week: begin with the end in mind and reverse engineer results in a way that will make your achievements so much more consistent and predictable. They will have you breaking records and bettering your best in ways that you never thought possible.
Your Dental Practice Success
The advantage you have in life is you know what winning looks like but that’s winning of the past. We are here to define winning of the future. Even if that is just maintaining the present status quo, it requires a whole new set of focuses and skills because often times growth begins to look quite different when complacency sets in and you become comfortable. Backsliding can sneak up on you.
It’s true, as an athlete, you can’t physically maintain your same level of world class performance forever. However, that’s where we are different. In an all-encompassing event (the Olympics of life), we not only can, we must constantly reinvent ourselves and keep getting better. Not only does our success, but our existence, depend on it.
Your evolution as a world class life and dental athlete never ends. And that’s as good as any reason why you are so very smart to be here.
You can settle for the past or you can prepare for the future but you can’t stay stuck in the present because it’s always fleeting. This moment is now gone, forever.
And that’s why being more purposeful with your goals and your decisions will ultimately define you, because your purpose determines who your future self becomes.
