All About ‘Motivation’!

Here’s the truth about Motivation… It doesn’t last. It never does, it’s temporary, it’s just that plain and simple.

It is also absolutely necessary.

When you grasp and act on this reality you will suddenly transform the culture of your Practice by fueling the fire of your Team and your Patients…it happens first with you.

I want you to think of it like a fire; you compare it to a glass of water, that works but that’s boring. If you fill up the water with motivation, people have to drink it, soon – glass empty. No choice but to start all over again.

Instead, I prefer you to see Motivation for your Team and everyone in your life like a fire you have to keep burning. You have to keep loading it up with wood.

When your Team is motivated, they are positive, energetic, focused, excited and they want, desire, strive to make things happen with your Patients every single day with every single interaction.

When your Team is not motivated, they are complacent, low energy, distracted, missing things and Patients are not engaged.

This can’t be allowed to happen.

Whether the Dentist takes ownership of it or the Practice Champion (which is just fine) you have to have a strategy, a plan, a system, a schedule of specific things that you will be doing to keep the motivation burning.

Now, before you go saying… “They are paid to be motivated”.

C’mon, silly idea. So are you – aren’t ya?!

You better believe it.

Ever had a bad day?

Ever just gone through the motions?

Ever had your mind somewhere else other than in your patients’ mouths.

Of course you have. Bad days happen, funks are real, human nature is defined by a cycle of ebbs and flows of motivation, energy, focus and so on and so forth.

I will tell you three things about this right here and right now…

#1. There is nothing you can do to make a bigger impact in your Team’s morale than to have a happy Doctor. Period.

#2. There is nothing more important to keep your team motivated than to include them, make them part of something, and give them specific goals and objectives that they buy into and can achieve something greater than their paycheck.

#3. There is nothing that will drive your patients’ success, case acceptance, creation of larger treatment plans and referrals than cultivating the motivation, positive energy and inspirational culture of your Practice, Team, and Dentist.

Your patients will thrive off of your energy.

Now, here’s the lesson – motivation isn’t optional no matter how successful you are – as long as you are human, the need for motivation is real and will never go away.

People who can’t be motivated, with their black clouds and Eeyore attitudes, must be cut loose, sent away, let go – simple as that.

You have to protect morale and motivation more than anything else in your practice.

And accept the fact that it’s going to wear off as fast as you put it on…there has to be ongoing motivation, reasons to win, ambitions and desires to achieve, and there has to be catalysts that add wood to the fire to get it burning bigger and hotter as you grow to reach the next level.

Always. These are rules, laws, facts, science. Deal with it.
