Your Next Chapter [Part 1 of 3]: Defined Plan

Today, we are going to talk about something very important.  So important that it is unbelievable and quite frankly a real shame that this is not considered a priority or even on doctors’ radars throughout their careers.  It is not discussed, taught or even brought up in school.

That’s how to get out.

Or what to do if something bad happens.

Or how to save money to be able to retire some day.

Or the best way to exit or transition your practice in the future.

Or how to work part time without sacrificing your income.

The fact is: you may (if you are like most), believe you are going to work until you can’t work anymore; but you can’t possibly believe that you will rely on dentistry your entire life for the income necessary to live on.

At some point the fruits of your labor should provide seeds to create a fortune that then sustains you for your lifetime.  Dentistry is not just about having a ‘great lifestyle’ and making a higher income than most.  It is and should be about being responsible with your finances and your career which means…

Career Planning

Imagine that, the things they told you in high school, maybe college and then you said all over again to your kids.

This time we aren’t talking about career planning as in what to do for your career but we are talking about career exiting or what to do now that you have had your career.

We are going to be exploring this throughout the next few Weekly Reports so pay attention and please, for your own benefit, don’t miss anything.

Just in case you are still trying to figure out what to be when you grow up or you are just seeking to get more out of what you’ve built or you are needing clarity of your plan, purpose, focus … last week I did an incredible (if I do say so myself) and very rare and unique implementation workshop all about getting clarity, honing in on goals and then reverse engineering those goals back into your business model and practice plan and structure.

If you missed out – it ties in directly to our discussion today and the coming weeks.  Go here and study it now; you are going to love it…

That’s brings us to this topic and question:

What’s Next?

It’s a great question, isn’t it?  Because you are the painter of your own life’s canvas.  You are the architect of your own business decisions.

Of course, you need help bringing them to life and that’s exactly what I’m here for and what I’m going to do to help be your guide over the next few weeks.

It really doesn’t matter which decade of your career you are in – this question applies!  What’s next for you can be determined by so many things…

Preferences

Lifestyle

Family

Health

And of course financial circumstances

What you don’t want to be the determinant of your “what’s next” are industry trends or variables forcing you to settle or practice against what you want.

I call the opposite of all of those: practicing on your own terms.

That is what you want to focus your considerations on when answering this questions.  What do you want those terms to be

How long?

How much?

What?

With who?

For whom?

Then you have to establish a timeline that is anchored to your results.  You can always choose to extend the timeline or change the plans.  That’s the beauty of it – you are in control.

But… You must have a timeline because otherwise no benchmarks will be met and all results will be elusive – unless they are held accountable to specific deadlines.

You can’t just wake up one day and think all the sudden you are going to bring things to a close.  If you do that you are going to be at the mercy of outside forces.

You don’t want that.  You worked too hard and too long and it means too much to go out on someone else’s terms.

The only way to avoid this is to make your own decisions and to plan out the next chapter as you want it to be.

You’d be well served to go through the Implementation Workshop from last week before we move on…I’ll give you one more week to do that.

Then, next week we will dive head first into the things to begin thinking about in addition to how much more money you should save in order to not have to practice by necessity and to not have to suppress your lifestyle or take a hit on your income.

It’s all possible but it’s darn sure going to require more money off the table into your wealth account than you think or than your financial advisor has promised you.

I’ll show you all the options you have and the adventures you can pick for the next chapters in the book of your career that have yet to be written!
